You are clearly speaking in the language of the waterfowl hunter! The only three I don't know off hand (though I've never been a waterfowl hunter) are So-suddley, Sprig and Jart. Very curious about those.

I couldn't help but join in the fun:
I plucked these from my signed copy of Names and Portraits of Birds (Trumbull, 1888) but since we beat this topic to death I kept it to a mere smattering of colloquial names used by Connecticut "fowlers" or "Gunners" (I was inspired by Keith Mueller's post) from 18th and 19th century names. Anyone venture a guess of these birds (If I get no responses should I assume we moved on from this topic.....?)

White-belly (used by Milford Gunners)-
Pheasant Duck (Milford Gunners)-
Meadow Chick (East Haddam Gunners)-
Crow Bill (Stratford Gunners)-
Pied-winged Coot (Branford [Stony Creek or "Creeker"] Gunners)-
Old Injun (Stonington and Essex Gunners)-
Squatter (Stratford Gunners)-
Sea Quail (Saybrook and Lyme Gunners)-

Incidentally, I still refer to Surf Scoters as "Skunkheads" for fun and in all seriousness probably always will refer to Long-tailed Duck as "Oldsquaw" - old habits die hard.
