Hello all!
Enigmail, the OpenPGP extension for Thunderbird has been accepted as a
Google Summer of Code (GSoC) project! Enigmail is looking for someone to
help improve the UI. If you are interested you can check out the project
on Mozilla's Google Summer of Code project list here:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Community:SummerOfCode18
Or, you can get in touch with the mentor of this project, Patrick
Brunschwig mailto:patrick@enigmail.net. Please send your application
and include a list of your top 3 pain points with Enigmail's current UI
and what you would do to fix them.
The deadline to get involved in GSoC is quickly approaching (the 27th),
so move quickly if you are interested! This is a great opportunity to
learn more about development, Thunderbird, and contributing to open source!

I'm curious, wouldn't it be better for this to be a joint venture with
the P=P people who are working on fully integrating Enigmail/PGP into
Thunderbird? OR maybe it is?

It doesn't have to be the same. Enigmail can be used without pEp.

Top-posting because you did...
My concern is duplication of effort...
Since the P=P team is working fully integrating PGP/Enigmail and making
it very easy (or at least much easier) for the average person to use, it
only makes sense (in my mind) to coordinate with them, maybe even
letting them manage the process (mentor?)...
But, thats just my opinion...

Note that Patrick, the author of Enigmail, will be mentoring this project. I think this will allow for enough coordination!

That's a misinterpretation. The pEp people created an engine. I
integrated that engine into Enigmail and created/adopted the UI for it.
I cooperate with the pEp team, but I'm not part of pEp.

Ok, but I read your response 3 times and don't quite see a definite
response...
Can we agree that there was considerable noise some time back about how
pEp were working on a much improved integration of - Enigmail, I guess -
into Thunderbird, that would be much easier for non-technically inclined
people to use?
Assuming yes, are you saying that you will indeed be cooperating with
them, to eliminate any duplication of effort in this regard?
With the very limited resources available, it seems to me every effort
should be made to cooperate and eliminate duplication of efforts.

I don't speak for pEp, but I don't think that's what they said. The
mission of pEp is to make encryption easy to use for everyone. This
goes far beyond Thunderbird, and covers all messenger-like applications.
Assuming yes, are you saying that you will indeed be cooperating with
them, to eliminate any duplication of effort in this regard?
Integration of pEp in Enigmail is completed, and will be released
shortly. I did indeed cooperate with pEp for the last 2.5 years. But pEp
didn't work on Enigmail, and I didn't work on pEp.
With the very limited resources available, it seems to me every effort
should be made to cooperate and eliminate duplication of efforts.
This has happened as far as possible. But as pEp is not limited to
Enigmail, we strive for different missions. pEp provides -- from my
point of view -- a crypto-engine, just like GnuPG. It does several
things better than pure GnuPG, but it remains an engine, without a UI.
That limits the scope for "duplication of efforts" substantially.
Duplicate efforts can only occur around functionality that engine
provides and Enigmail would also do on its own. But that's a small part
of Enigmail.

Ok, thanks for the informative response Patrick. It looks like
everything is in order and I'm guilty of the same thing I accuse others
of when appropriate: speaking about something of which I know less than
enough to have an informed opinion, so I'll stop talking now...
