Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes

I will be starting a trip from Owen Sound Ontario to New Orleans in mid
may.Can anyone recommend a marina in Chicago with easy access from Lake
Michigan and to the canal? Also one in New Orleans close to the French
quarter?
Bryan, we have made the trip down the Mississippi twice--not by choice,
I should add, but by necessity, as the arkansas river comes into the miss.
at about mile 600--too far down for us to run up the river to the ohio.
That being said, here are our thoughts on New Orleans marinas.
First of all, there are no marinas close to the French Quarter, as the
Quarter
is right off the river. The marinas are in Lake Pontchartrain. If you are
coming down the Mississippi or from the west, you will need to take the
Industrial Canal into the lake. If you are coming from the east, you should
use the Rigolets.
The New Orleans marinas are in two areas: West End and South Shore. In the
summer of 2002, we stayed a week at Orleans Marina, in the West End, and
were delighted. Nice facilities, many excellent restaurants nearby, and
a very good grocery store (Robert's). You can take a cab to the Quarter,
or a city bus, or if the weather's nice, do what we did and ride your bike.
The only bad thing about the biking was that we left our camera on the boat,
to cut down on "baggage," and then happened to encounter a real Jazz funeral
on Esplanade on our way to the Quarter and no way to take pix! We have
not stayed at the N.O. Municipal marina, which is in the same area, but
have heard good things. The other important thing about West End is that
this is the only area on this side of the lake where you can refuel
(Schuberts).
In the summer of 2004, we stayed at South Shore marina and found it to be
less satisfactory. The only restaurant nearby is the buffet in the casino
boat on-site. If you like gambling, that might not bother you. But if I
wanted to gamble in New Orleans, I would go to Harrah's on Canal, which
is much, much nicer than the casino at South Shore. There are no fuel or
pumpout facilities at South Shore; you will have to go to the West End for
that.
