Bob Austin mentioned the Willard 30 as a possible
alternative to a Nordic Tug 26. I used to own a W30 so
I am a little (lot) biased, but I have spent a bunch
of time on a NT26 too (they are very sweet handling
boats).
There is currently 1 (one) NT 26 on Yachtworld, and 8
Willard 30 trawlers (another 6 cutters!). Most W30's
list for around $45K, the NT26 is $75K - though for a
similar vintage Willard will approach $75K. Willards
carry 100 gallons diesel and 100 gallons water, the
NT26 50 gallons water, 75 diesel. The W30 is a full
displacement, ballasted hull with an incredibly high
D/L ratio (well over 300 - carries 4,000 pounds
ballast for its 15,000 displacement!!!), the NT26 is a
light, semi planing hull. The one thing the NT26 will
do is go faster (though I question whether it will do
10 knots with a Perkins 4-108, especially with full
tanks/provisions). The W30 is a 6-knot boat, which is
pretty slow (recall, a new model W30 went from the
Chesapeake to Bermuda a few years ago). The W30's full
displacement hull will roll more than the NT26s too.
While I have to admit I think both boats are too small
(for $75K you can buy a fair-condition Willard 36, a
sistership of which has voyaged to Hawaii), but if
someone is looking at an NT26, I'd advise looking long
and hard at the Willard 30. Also look at the GB32,
though they carry similar price tags -- but there are
more of them from which to chose.
