Engine/Gear Rattle

I have a rather large rattle when I idle down from cruising speed.  Sometimes
I have to go in and out of gear to get through a marina without making  a
wake. With a warm engine/gear if I come down to 1000 rpms (or below) it sounds
and feels like the engine/gear are going to come out of the boat. Cummins
330/Twin Disc gear. I ask a Twin Disc rep and he said "nature of the  beast."  The
beast needs to be tamed, seems to me.

Any Ideas out there?

Doc,

With out being there I'd say your flex plate is the problem.

When I replaced the flex plate on a Yanmar engine several years ago, I had
the same annoying rattle, got the same answer from their service rep. After
I adjusted the gear shift natural position and ran the boat for a while it
rarely came back, perhaps the small springs were a bit tight in their
mountings.

Between this new mobile blog and my high gain cellular amp, I'm going to
try something different. Every few hours I'll make an entry on the blog
about our offshore overnight passage between Block Island, RI and Cape May,
NJ and the thoughts going through my head. The postings are immediately put
online even though I'm away from land. The furthest offshore we'll be is
about 20 miles and the amp should be able to pull in some New York and New
Jersey cells. It should all work.

The picture quality from the phone is pretty low but it's good enough to
get a sense of what's going on. I'm doing everything from the phone
including the postings (and this email). aCappella is running PC-free (off)
until sometime when we're back on land.

So follow along - we're currently south of Long Island - passed by Montauk
about 30 minutes ago - traveling 8.4 kts (current against us) on a course
of 244 degrees M.
