I looked at both Phorum and SMF a couple weeks ago.  Both are free, and
Free Software.  Both are written in PHP and use MySQL as a backend.

Both require a mod installation to get full two-way email integration  -
it's not in the core functionality.

I've used both, and like both (and likewise, like both more than
vBulletin and some others).  I've never used email with either one, and
cannot comment on that.

Both are on Github.  I looked at the number of contributors and their
activity level, and the amount of activity in their respective support
fora.  SMF has like orders of magnitude more activity.  Phorum has had
very few commits in the last year or so.  This was what decided me.

I've had SMF running since last weekend.  People are using it.  Have
never installed Phorum, cannot comment on that.

Since I've already got an instance of SMF running, I'm going to try to
install the mod for 2-way email, just 'cause I'm curious now.

I would strongly recommend Phorum http://www.phorum.org/. Reprap's
forums http://forums.reprap.org/ use it, it is free, and apparently
has a complete 2-way forum to mailing list integration system

I use the Reprap forums quite a lot, and I can say with certainty that I
like it waaaay more than vBulletin. Definitely the one I would go for.

You know, it's really odd that this subject pops up here
         right now.

I just built a forum for someone using SMF. I think it has
         the email
functionality you are talking about, or at least part of it.
         I've never
messed with the email stuff myself, at least not yet, so I'm
         not sure if
it does everything you want. You might want to look into that.

It's pretty good as forum software goes. It certainly is
         popular. The
SMF team uses it as their support forum, of course, and that
         forum has
millions of posts in hundreds of thousands of topics by
         hundreds of
thousands of users in like fifty languages.

I like it because all of its basic functionality, including
         posting,
works fine and looks great even if you're using a script
         blocker. Try
         that with Google Groups.

If it does everything you want, it wouldn't be hard to set
         up. Maybe an
         hour or so.

I can get you one for nuthin'.

 <snip>

Ignore previous post, here is the mod you want I think:

 http://custom.simplemachines.__org/mods/index.php?mod=2843
 <http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2843>

It's compatible with the latest stable version. I have not tested
this mod myself, but it's got a thousand downloads and the latest
update is from October, so that's a good sign...

Read the emails you got when you subscribed for unsubscribe instructions.
There should also be an option not to receive digests (in other words, you
are allowed to post to the list, but you don't receive emails).

Also:  If one is assuming that one can unsubscribe from a list by
sending that word in the subject line, which works for some lists, it is
too much to expect that it will actually work when that word is
misspelled...
