Hi all,
Yesterday (Sat 8/26) I birded Long Island Sound by boat from about 10am to
5pm. I traveled from New Haven Harbor to Goose Island (Guilford) to the
"ferry lanes" in the eastern Sound, then northwest to Black Point and
worked the coast back to New Haven.
This is peak time for tern numbers and diversity in LIS but both were quite
low yesterday along that stretch of coast. It is unusual somewhere along
that route to not run into some large flocks of Common Terns, but yesterday
there wasn't much going on. Just a few dozen terns here and there. Single
digit Roseates, one Black, one Least, and no Forster's.
A likely early returning adult Great Cormorant was at Goose Island, a great
out-of-season spot for this species. There were also 10 Common Eider; they
seem to occur there pretty much every summer now.
A few Ruby-throated Hummingbirds were migrating over water.
This morning (Sun 8/27) was another really good early morning for warbler
migration on Willard's Island at Hammonasset Beach SP in Madison. Over 200
individual warblers of 15 species were seen. As usual, most birds moved
through during the first 45 minutes after sunrise. Best bird was probably a
Connecticut Warbler which is a bit on the early side and definitely well
before their peak migration period. A vocal Pileated Woodpecker, scarce in
the park, was heard once on Willard's itself, and John Oshlick saw the bird
later in the morning towards the west end.
