Sanderling - Cruise north - July 26, 2006

We departed Mattapoisett Harbor (off Buzzards Bay) on Tuesday morning,
in time to get to Woods Hole (about 10 nm away) near slack tide. We
arrived about an hour and a half before slack, and the current was still
running about two knots! It's not a place you want to be at our speed
when the current is running its highest.

Got to Marthas Vineyard less than an hour after passing through Woods
Hole. A friend had told us about a little-known anchorage just to the
west of Edgar Town and it is a truly beautiful spot. We had difficulty
spotting it from the ocean until we were about a mile away, and then
discovered that there were two break-waters on either side of the small
channel leading into Lake Tashmoo, a well-marked channel from the
entrance into the deeper part of this well-protected lake, and numerous
places to anchor. There's even a FREE beach and dingy dock on the east
side, about a mile from town.

Since our dingy's outboard is now working, we took the dingy to the
dingy dock and walked to town - about a 15 minute walk down a "country"
road with a sidewalk on one side. Did a little Christmas shopping, had
an ice cream cone, checked out the harbor (made us glad we were anchored
at Lake Tishmoo), and returned to Sanderling.

Tomorrow we're going to head to Woods Hole for two nights. There is a
little storm coming through on Friday with winds gusting to 20-30 knots,
so we wanted to be in a protected area. Eel Pond at Woods Hole has
moorings available ($50/night - outrageous) and we have one reserved.
The price does include head/showers ashore, dingy dock, and launch
service. We'll tour the Oceanographic Labs, etc, during the day and the
cats won't have to be confined to the inside of the boat as they would
be if we were in a marina.

On Saturday we'll head through the Cape Cod Canal to Barnstable Harbor,
and perhaps spend a night or two, then head to Provincetown where we can
search for whales in the ocean close to shore. Then back across
Massachusetts Bay to Plymouth, then Boston (perhaps - that's still up in
the air), Salem and Gloucester. Dates for any of them are up in the air,
but by early August we'll definitely be heading north/east.

Greetings Bob,
Glad Tashmoo turned out to be a happy destination for you.
After P-town...and Plymouth...you might check out Scituate.
Good harbor/berthing and small town with good restaurants and move theatre,
easy access...

Then Boston...great town. Charleston side, good marina, blv Constitution
wharfot right near the S/V Consitution, then short walk across the bridge into
the North End, Italian section, great eating/food smells and easy distance a
bit further to Quincy Mkt/Fanueil Hall, central heart of the town.
Hv fun
John
