INTRODUCING - 12 (That's twelve!)
Brand New Artists  to our 2018
Greater Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour

Kelly Allard is a classically trained oil painter. She was born in Dallas, Texas. She studied Communications Design at University of North Texas followed by Pantura Studios in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She studied under Hans-Peter Szameit and Sanna Tomac now co-owners SARA, the Swedish Academy Of Realist Art. She studied Classical Realism which utilizes the time-tested methods that were used to train the great artists of the past.

Nikki Brook's paintings are inspired by elements of nature, architecture and design. She paints atmospheric abstracts, moody seascapes and deconstructed architecture. A minimalist aesthetic is conveyed through monochromatic and limited color schemes. She visually distills subjects down to their essence. Her emphasis is on structure, gradations, light and space. Her mediums are acrylic and oil paints with the occasional application of plaster for texture.

Suzi Sharp has done art throughout her life. A few years ago she started doing multimedia mosaics and fell in love with it. All her designs are her own. She has always loved color and movement.  She collects unique tidbits and incorporates them into her original designs from wall hangings to plaques, She also does address numbers and garden posts, pots, and rocks.

Shannon Kruger's  gift is in the transforming of fine colored and textured textiles into beautiful art pieces.  The technique is an old one that she has taken to a new and exquisite level.  Her work is a balance between classic elegance and the enchanting beauty of the pacific northwest.  Her artistic insight insures that no two pieces are alike.  There are baskets for every personal style. Each piece may be decorated with beach wood, natural stone beads and spun fibers.  Remember each piece is handcrafted and a one of a kind original.

Robin Marsh is best known for intensely detailed pen and ink wildlife illustrations. She sees patterns in everything. Flora, fauna, and even urban settings have influenced her work over the years as well as Native American artwork.

Inspired by education and the raw beauty of wildlife, Robin enjoys the entire process of creating a new piece from studying the animal to laying down the last bit of ink. She rarely adds color to her work.

The simplicity of the black and white provides a clean balance for the complexity of the patterns.

Dan Stromstad was mentored by an internationally known turner and after many years of effort is now demonstrating and teaching other turners.  He has demonstrated at clubs in in Fife and Olympia as well as at the State Fair.

Most of the wood that he chooses to use grows in and around this area.  Since most of this wood is freshly cut as a result of storms it requires special treatment and curing which can take as much as three years for some woods.  The wood is turned into a basic form and slowly dried.  Some woods require special treatment to prevent cracking.  Therefore patience is a requirement.  Once the wood is ready for the second turning all the excitement begins.  This is the second creative stage with all the fine details to make the turning special and unique.

Fred Buxton – Raining Sunshine Studio was introduced to kiln formed fused glass in 2014.  He is a self-taught artist and has dabbled in other mediums over the years, but  found glass to be a perfect fit for his creative style.  Although he enjoys all aspects of fused glass, he specialize in doing landscapes and abstracts in glass.  In 2016, he opened Raining Sunshine Glass Studio where he pursues his passion and teaches classes in kiln formed glass.  He has been a member artist at Proctor Art Gallery in Tacoma since 2016 and currently shows his work there.

Marci Carlson was born in Pittsburgh, PA and now resides in Tacoma, WA. Having studied and worked as an RN has given her a comprehensive knowledge of human anatomy. She paints portraits, still life, wild life and an occasional landscape using oil on canvas or linen.

She studied with Larry Casso at the Baton Rouge Fine Arts Academy and Jamie Cooper from Ligonier, PA. She also participated in Jeff Watts online Atelier program. Her work has been shown at the Bottle Works in Johnstown, PA, the Pharmacy Art Gallery and SAA at the Hoogland Art Center in Springfield, IL. Her work can currently be viewed at the Proctor Art Gallery in Tacoma.

Scott Scheibal has been a life long resident of Pierce County and does landscape maintenance for a living. He started out his profession by helping his grandparents around their home and rental properties at age 10. Since then he have worked for Tacoma City Light, and 2 other companies for 9 years before starting his own business, Old Town Professional Grounds Maintenance in 1995.

He started creating custom rock planters and Bonsai style plants 18 yrs ago as a hobby where he made them for gifts for family and friends. He recently started to sell them at the Gig Harbor Tidefest art show to expand his hobby and to share his love of this living art for the last 3 years.

Jill Whitmore creates fused glass, multi media art and one of a kind signature jewelry pieces in glass. Her work is collected widely throughout the North and Southwest.  Several of her pieces have been brought overseas to Japan, India and Europe.  Her glass art is inspired by things that she loves...the wilderness, trees, forests, flowers, and abstracts to name a few. She also creates multi media art, which incorporates canvas, acrylic, interference paint and glass.  These often large, always abstract pieces are inspired by different combinations of the elements.  She pours her heart and soul into all that she does creatively.

Andrew ‘Van’ DeGoede grew up on the Puget Sound surrounded by the natural beauty of towering mountains and opulent forests. It's no surprise that such beauty would prompt a desire to not only capture it, but to understand, and only then, to truly enjoy it. There is no doubt that the grey days of the Pacific Northwest have had a large influence on Andrew's restrained palette and love of value based artwork.

DeGoede traveled to California to receive his Bachelor's Degree in Studio Arts with a concentration in Art History. He dedicated the final years of his undergraduate years to Portrait Drawing under Tony Pro. Returning to Seattle to attend Juliette Aristides' Classical Atelier, Andrew gained a solid foundation in Academic Drawing and Traditional Oil Painting techniques.

Jeff Yeager has always loved to create things with his hands. Little did he know, when he took a welding class in High School, That this would later become his medium. It was 25 years later that he saw an exibit at a garden show that inspired him to try his hand at metal crafting. He began collecting scrap metal from junk yards, auto repair shops, and yard and estate sales. He soon began putting together pieces that he displayed in his yard. He started out selling at a local Farmers Market, and found out that people really enjoyed his creations.

His creations are a combination of whimsy, steam punk and eccentric, and no two are ever alike. He uses old tools, railroad spikes, used auto parts, pots and pans, old farm equipment, silverware, rebar, and horseshoes.

Some of our 2018 Open Studio Artists will be demonstrating at the Farmer's Market this Summer before the Open Studio Tour
(September 14 -16).  Come see their work!
