Key West area dodged another bullit with Rita. We were very LUCKY as the
storm could have been much worse. We were evacuated off the Navy Base Marina
day before yesterday after prepping the boats for the storm. The Navy is not
letting us back onto the base until after they complete "assessments" but did
allow us to return this morning long enough to check our vessels and get them
back on shore power, etc. Serendipity fared fine with only the loss of
another upper helm cover (ripped canvas). This is the second one of those we
have lost this year having had another one rip during Dennis last june. But,
that is a small price to pay compared to potentials.

Meanwhile, we're battening down the hatches in the Houston/Galveston area.
Still looks like it's going S of here, but we'll be on the "dirty" side, and
can expect significant storm surge. My harbor, South Shore Harbor has
floating docks and is well off the bay and protected well, but we're still
taking down canvas, etc. Mandatory evacuations from Galveston already. I had
a room reserved at the hotel here for Friday night, but they told me tough
luck; they're closing down.

Floating docks work great until they float off the top of the piling. Is
projected storm surge higher than top of piling?
The only significant damage in my area during Isabell was from this.
