TWL: stinky sump

I have a shower on my Ocean Alexander that drains into a sump, that
eventually triggers a float switch and then is pumped overboard. It's in a
glass box with a semi-loose fitting lid. And it stinks. I've cleaned it
several times but it just keeps getting stinky. I use the shower on the boat
a few times a week (Hey! I'm only there a few times a week) so it is an
on-going problem.

Any ideas on how to control the odor? The only think I could think of is to
seal the box better. It thought I would hit up the list for suggestions
before I do that.

-mike,
Co incidence Mike.
I changed the float switch on my sump today. It also has a loose
fitting top port.
I went thru the same drill yrs ago. No need to seal it.
Clean it with vinegar and water. I then run some vinegar thru it
regularly and have no odor at all. Pur it down all the drains to the
sump.
DO NOT try to use soap to clean it as that is one thing that promotes
smell.
I lived on brd and did this. Now that i dont  I still use the vinegar.
Something else, I put in a fitting in the side of the tank abt  1/2 way
up the side and ran a piece of garden hose fr. there to the sump in the
engine room. I go there a lot! So if the float switch or pump fails  I
see water trickling in to the sump and dont have an unseen overflow.
I mounted the pump and switch in the sump on a piece of scrap alum that
just sits there and is not screwed dwn. so to chg something  I just pick
the whole thing out and wrk on it . The wires are extra long!

Try some Rid-X or one of it's RV derivatives.  Its just enzymes and
bacteria that consume waste.  Don't know how it would work in a shower sump
but it shouldn't hurt anything.
