The Honda E U series (EU 1000, 2000 and 3000) are alternators driving an
inverter--has a pure sine wave--and claims to have cleaner power than line
power at home.  This is a very effecient generator, since the alternator speed
varies--and with low loads drops to a fast idle on the econmy setting.  I
suspect that we will see more of this in the marine and RV fields in the next
few years.  These units are also very quiet.

The lap top is a bit different than a desk top P C, in that there is some
degree of filtering via the "brick" power supply--and even further buffering
by the battery.

Certainly there can be spikes in voltage--but there is perhaps as much or more
danger from the DC 12 volt power supply on your boat when the alternator is
running.
