I, too use the cradlepoint router, with a verizon (pantech um175) aircard. I've added a cyfre ca-819 amp and a digital CW-597 8foot antenna. The amp increases reception of the aircard impressively--from one or two bars to 4 bars. The advantage of the cradlepoint over the mifi is the ability to connect an external antenna and amp. The cradlepoint also allows you to hard wire (ethernet) other devices, printers, IP phone, etc. Next step is to connect the router to a wifi bridge and antenna to take advantage of wifi. Haven't completed that yet. Any suggestions on a wifi bridge and antenna?

We've been using the RadioLabs WiFi antenna for over three years now.
The problems were associated with some original models, and were
addressed and corrected prior to 2008 (not sure when). We love that
antenna - it has never failed to connect (when unencrypted WiFi is
available) via the 15 foot USB cable attached and using either Windows
WiFi software or the software that comes with the antenna; you choose
which way you want to go.
This was our antenna of choice when anchored near condos or in/near
marinas with free WiFi. The biggest issue now is that people are getting
sophisticated enough that they encrypt their WiFi signal so you can't
piggy back on it, but you'll still find a few that are open.
Our internet connection of choice now is a Cradlepoint wireless router
into which we can plug our unlimited USB air card. The boat becomes a
mini hot spot and we can connect all three of our traveling laptops to
the internet at the same time, if we wish, without having to share a USB
plug.

FYI, there is a way to use an external amp with the MIFI. Wilson electronics
makes a few solutions using a cell phone cradle and amplifier that works with
the MIFI. I've been using one with my MIFI and it works great in those
locations that I can't get a strong enough signal. This can boost throughput
significantly in low signal areas.
Simply place the MIFI in the cradle which is connected to an amplifier and
antenna. When not using internet you can also place your cell phone in the
cradle to improve signal for that too. Using a bluetooth headset this works
very well.

Yes, Frank, but Verizon may be giving away the MiFi...at least they did for
me...after having a USB dongle for two years.
You can check on whether they are giving you a deal by going to the Verizon
Wireless web site. Logging on to MY VERIZON, go to UPGRADE PHONE and see
what they offer.
