Of the Ten Commandments that God proclaims to the Jewish people, honoring your father and your mother is the only one that includes the apparent reward of a lengthened life (20:12). Why would this particular commandment include the added benefit of a lengthened life?

The Malbim proposes that by honoring our parents, we respect and appreciate their contributions to our lives. After all, they are responsible for bringing us into the world. This focus on the positive changes our outlook on the world, which naturally leads to a longer life. What a powerful flow of energy that begins with positive thinking and enables us to not only enjoy life but extend it!
