Larry:
Here's what I can tell you about the Icom 710RT: it is a great rig for a
combo marine/ham rig. It is not a great ham rig because of operating
considerations. It is too difficult to track receiver and transmitter on ham
bands, there isn't enough flexibility in selectivity, etc. But the reports I
get are GREAT! I've had no trouble talking to anything I can hear.
My thoughts on SSB are, you need the simplicity of operation of the 710 or
an equivalent on the marine bands for non-radio types that may someday have
to use it in an emergency mode. You would LIKE to have the flexibility and
operational convenience of an Icom 746 or the like for hamming. You can't
have both, unfortunately, but the 710 is an all around great rig.

I want an SSB rig for communications outside of VHF range. 90% of the time
it would be for Hamming, chatting,

Sure you can..As I have said two radios will do it. A 710 and a 735 or a
746/756 if you can afford it. Use one at a time with an A/B switch. Good
function and legal on both band sets. Note that you can pick up a 735 for
$400 or so and with a little doing you can get them to drive the same tuner.
If you really worry you might even throw in a backup manual tuner.
This provides full backup of both radios presuming the amateur set has been
modified.
