Manhattan Circumnavigation

Bob De Groot asked about this side trip

I've done this several times, my boat is 21 feet.  The lowest bridge (my
recollection) without opening is 25 feet.

Tidal planning is critical.  The channel between Roosevelt Island and
Manhattan sees 7 knots in either direction, and just north of that Hell Gate
can be just that, plan the timing here carefully if you have a displacement
trawler.

Give the Intrepid on the Hudson a wide clearance.  There are CG guys there
riding patrol with 50 cal machine guns on their bow.

Also, don't miss the anchorage west of the Statue of Liberty.  Head 270
close by the buoys on the south side of the statue and you will enter the
small opening to the anchorage, which can hold maybe 15 boats.  There is a
small dinghy dock, but a good walk to any transportation, like the PATH
trains or ferries to Manhattan.

For your trip up the Hudson, you can ride with an upstream tide for about
nine hours if you also plan that right.

BTW, according to an archived NY Times article, the pronunciation is not as
stated in another response, but : "Over the centuries the name (pronounced
SPY-ten DIE-vul) has been grist for legends -- usually linked to the fierce
confluence of the Harlem and Hudson Rivers below -- and has been translated
as "spitting devil," "in spite of the devil" and "spouting meadow."

I grew up near there.  Right or wrong, The NY Times pronunciation is how the
locals say it.

Thank you for the info. This is awesome. We can certainly get underneath a
25 foot clearance bridge.

We'll double check the charts and call the tour company that does this.
We've taken the tour but it's been too many wine bottles ago to recall the
details.

Best,
Bob
