I'm with Pascal, skip the Lake and go around.  I took one boat from Houston
(Clear Lake) to Virginia and didn't give the lake a thought.  We went around
and enjoyed a couple of days in Key West.  If time is the issue, pay someone
to bring it to Sarasota and take it the rest of the way yourself.

you dont' even need to go all the way to key west, you can cut thru the
"yacht channel" just north off Long Key (south end of islamorada)  or go up
around north of marathon.  well marked, deep enough (6' in the yach channel)

i delivered a 54 Hatt a couple of months ago and went around.  it adds 2
days or so at hull speed... nice run anyway...

Ft Pierce - west palm, west palm - Miami,  miami - cape sable, cape sable -
ft myers.
the OWW at hull speed is really a two day deal anyway...

Jeff,
We came across the Lake in January.  The Corps was showing a depth of 2.7
and we draft 3'.  We spoke with George at Roland Martin Marina.  It was a calm
day and we paid close attention to the chartplotter and keeping the back
markers lined up.  We did not even touch and the lock at the east side was
open.
We figured that if we went around, it would add 4 days or more to our trip
based on distance to make it all the way to Stuart.
Get as close to the Lake the day before - we stopped at La Belle  the
night before so we could cross as early as possible - the first lock opening.

Back to work after babyhow do you know when youre ready?
