Customs Decals

I've read in the Skipper Bob books for the Canadian trips that a "Customs
Decal" is necessary for reentry into the USA.  We are leaving Monday, June
18th and may not be able to get one of those decals before we leave.  What
problems may we encounter if we do not have such decal?

Here is the renewal email I get from Customs, which may be helpful:

Your decal/transponder renewal application from Customs and Border
Protection is now ready for review and purchasing.

  • Go to www.cbp.gov from any PC with a browser (website is not compatible
    with Macintosh).
  • Click on the "Travel" tab, at top of screen.
  • Click on "User Fee Decals and Transponders".
  • Click on "Apply Online for User Fee Decals and Transponders", on right
    side of screen, under "On the Web".
  • Login using your User ID and Password in the Login Section.
  • From the "Welcome Page", select "Renewals or Saved Purchases".
    You will then be presented with a screen that displays all of the most
    recent renewal forms that we have on file. Click on a Reference Number for
    the form (decals/transponders) you wish to renew; you will then be presented
    with a pre-filled form showing the information you provided us last year.
    You can change, update or add information. Follow the instructions provided
    on the screen to purchase decals/transponders. If you have any questions,
    please call (317) 298-1245 or send an e-mail to decals@dhs.gov.

Important!
You may also receive a paper renewal application that looks very similar to
your online renewal form. If you register and purchase your
decals/transponders online DO NOT complete and return the paper forms. Doing
so will mean you have purchased additional decals/transponders. Customs and
Border Protection does not supply refunds for duplicate purchases. If you
have any questions, please call (317) 298-1245 or send an e-mail to
decals@dhs.gov.
