You are supposed to have a hard copy aboard, although it no longer has to be posted next to the radio.  Go to the FCC website.  You can track your records to verify your license(s) and I suspect you can order a copy.  I just got a new station license online and was able to tie-in my old station license, update my address and get a new copy of the old license -- pending sale of the old boat -- without cost.  The new station license, of course, was $200 for a ten-year term.

If you're getting a ship's license for an SSB, you probably also need a
restricted operator's license.  This isn't a well-known fact, but it is a
requirement.  The ship's license is for the equipment and the boat.  The
restricted operator's license is for you and it is good for your lifetime.

Question:  I applied (and paid) for both a Ships License and a restricted
Operators license, but this was during the Anthrax Scare a while ago and it
turned out my payment was part of the mail 'held for inspection /
decontamination' for several months.

During that time I moved.

I sent in the info for a change of address (and fee), and received
confirmation that they cashed my check, and noted my new address.  But:  I
have never received any hard copy License, or paperwork (other then the
Change of Address notice).    (I can look at the Website and see my license
was granted, along with the call letters and such).

Am I not supposes to have an actual hard copy of the license?  Both the
Boats and my own Restricted Operators permit?

If I remember correctly, you can order a new copy of your station
license.  However, for the lifetime Restricted Radiotelephone Operator
License you're out of luck.  You have to order a new one.
