SCC Members,

I am writing today to update you on the status of the Salida Cycling Club and its plans for the upcoming year.

The SCC Board of Directors has recognized that the club has, of late, faced challenges in our mission to provide value to its members and sponsors. After frank conversations among ourselves, as well as with sponsors and members, we believe that now is the time to reassess the club’s direction, and which cycling needs in our community we are best placed to fill. Salida’s cycling community has evolved tremendously over the last few years – with multiple thriving bike shops, growing organizations like SMT, and expanding interests (gravel, etc) among the area’s cyclists.

To that end, we’ve decided to undertake a period of strategic planning and a broader look at where we can best contribute to the cycling community. We will need YOU – our members, sponsors and bike enthusiasts – to inform this process and help us better understand our most effective direction for the future. Please be on the lookout for requests to actively participate in this process.

As we undertake this process, we will be suspending membership dues for 2018. (Details below) This means we plan to offer new and renewing members a free year of membership.

At the same time, we also want to respond to strong requests from membership for regular group rides provided by the club. While we have struggled to find committed single leaders for any given ride, we have come up with a new plan of rotating ride leaders for a set of weekly rides. Our calendar with the ride schedule and types will be up soon, and we will work to coordinate with (and not duplicate) rides offered by local bike shops. As we undertake a strategic planning process, we also plan to continue support of key events and causes that align with our mission.

This decision to “re-think” SCC’s role is motivated by a number of challenges that SCC has faced for a number of years:
• Declining Membership
• Declining participation and satisfaction in group rides
• Inability to find committed group ride leaders
• Lack of interest in certain SCC events
• Declining Road Race participation and rising costs, impacting the Salida Classic
• Decreasing interest in purchasing club clothing

The Board of Directors has already taken some short term decisions in response to these challenges:
• Redouble efforts to find SCC Group Ride leaders
• Produce a 2018 SCC Group Ride schedule
• Suspend membership dues for 2018
• Suspend requests for financial sponsorship of SCC for 2018
• Extend specific 2017 member benefits from Amica’s, SubCulture Cyclery, Absolute Bikes, and Salida Mountain Sports

Previously, we announced the decision from the 21FEB SCC Membership Meeting to suspend the Salida Classic for 2018.

In redefining SCC, we expect to create a value proposition that will merit financial support in 2019 from both sponsors and members.

We will keep you updated as to specific progress.  We will also be asking for your participation in the reinvention of our club.

Best Regards,

Eric Tauer

Hi Chaffee County cyclists!

Following up on Eric’s email (below) about the status of SCC for 2018, I’m excited to announce that SCC group rides are back by popular demand for the Spring and Summer of 2018!

Our calendar https://salidacyclingclub.org/events/  is now live, so check out the rides we have planned in May and June. Click on an individual ride on the calendar, and you’ll find a description – which includes date, time, description and meet-up point. Our calendar will be evolving month to month, and possibly week to week, so be sure to check back and see what’s on tap. Thanks to Harry Brull for maintaining the calendar, and those who have volunteered to lead rides. If you’d like to be a ride leader (one time or recurring), please let us know!

Here https://salidacyclingclub.org/salida-cycling-club-events-and-rides/  you can also find links to other local rides and events – including MTB rides by Absolute Bikes and events put on my Salida Mountain Trails. Know of other rides or events we should publicize? Please send them to me at janie@janiehayes.com mailto:janie@janiehayes.com .
