Wifi amplifier

Hi  Marty -

Your post  prompted me to write about our experience with the Hypergain
HG2409UM wifi  antenna from Hyperlink. This antenna  was touted on Panbo a year or
so  back, and I bought one without thinking too much about it.  A mistake. It
is cheaply made and there is no way to attach a proper cable such as LMR-400
to  it. Fortunately, the 3' cable was barely long enough to bring into the
pilothouse, but the base has already begun to separate from the antenna housing
and I've had to re-seal it. Since then I discovered a great company with the
unlikely name of Moonblink Communications. These guys are professionals and
have  been very helpful. Their A2408  8db omni antenna is actually less than
the Hypergain, but it is a much more rugged unit. We use these on our  sailboat
here in the Eastern Caribbean - we each have an antenna and 300mw  Ubiquiti
card. These antennas have a proper N-female which accepts the LMR400  cable
directly. No amplifiers needed - we can now get good signal and  link quality a
mile and more from the AP over water - plenty for any  anchorage.

No  connection - just passing along our experience.

Regards,

John
"Seahorse"

Mention  was made of the Radiolabs wifi amplifier.  My question is  which

amplifiers, if any, are people using and is a license required at  some
power level?

Radiolabs makes 1watt amplifiers and Hyperlink sells  units with power up
to 3 watts. Hyperlink's website says these units are for  export,
military etc only.
Raises a question of me as to the legality of  these units.

Any thoughts?

This isn't really an apples-to-apples comparison, but I thought I'd
throw out that my experience with the Ruckus MetroFlex has been great.
When the laptop cannot find a wifi connection or has a lousy
connection, I'll plug in the MetroFlex and have a great connection.
This is without going to any special trouble of finding a site high up
on the boat or anything.  I use it from the comfort of the salon.

I've only had one problem with it and it was an IP configuration
problem.  It defaults itself to 192.168.1.1 which happens to be what
most wifi access points default themselves to as well, so if that
happens you'll need to reconfigure the IP address of the MetroFlex.
Not hard to do, but very confusing to debug.

This is the company page for it...
http://www.ruckuswireless.com/products/metroflex/

It is itself an external antenna that has been optimized for wifi
connections.  It can be used a couple of different ways, but the way
that I use it is that I plug in a regular ethernet cable between the
MetroFlex and the laptop, the MetroFlex then acts as a DHCP server to
give me an IP address in which I can connect and manage the MetroFlex.
I instruct the MetroFlex to connect to a wifi connection and after it
reboots I'm up on that wifi connection.

It is possible to connect a wifi access point to the ethernet port of
the MetroFlex if you have more than one computer that needs to use it.
Of course that is a bit more complex to configure but not difficult.

I hope that helps...
