If you decide to go with "home" units, you might check the specs... My new "home" smoke detectors say operating temp range is 40 F (4.4 C) to 100 F (37.8 C).  My engine room gets much hotter than 100 F....  Not sure if they will work or not if outside specs.... Jim Gano
