Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsHi Jim,
I stumbled across your friendly moorings site and wanted to help a bit. I
started a website years ago with a similar aim, to document the free and/or
low cost walls and attractions along the New York Canal System. One thing
snowballed into another and now its turning into a full canal guide. I still
do list all the free walls though for each canal......From: NY Canals.com

Of what you have listed, there are few things you should be careful with.
1.) Fairport is not free. There is a small fee (~$5-$10), so perhaps you
should move it down to the lower section.
2.) Little Falls has two "walls". The main terminal wall is not free, I
believe it is $1/ft. The "day use" wall at Benton's Landing is free, but no
overnight use is allowed. Its is useful to go into Little Falls for food,
supplies, etc., its also closer to town than the terminal wall.
3.) I would say "most" locks allow you to spend the night, not "all". There
are a number that do not allow it for one legitimate reason or another such as
construction, interference with navigation, no place to tie up to, etc.
Many of the free walls of 5-10 years ago have been upgraded and now there is
a charge.
