NOTICE TO MARINERS
April 26, 2007
Chart 14786
Mariners are advised that the New York State Canal System will not open
for navigation as scheduled at 7 AM on Tuesday, May 1, 2007. A late
season nor'easter and additional recent rainfall, coupled with increased
snowmelt from recent warm weather, has left the rivers and lakes which
comprise, and are contributory to, the Canal System excessively swollen.
Until water levels recede, operations to place water control structures
in position and set buoys and other critical navigational aids can not
commence. Once water levels recede and this work commences,
approximately one week will be required to complete preparations for
opening the waterway, weather permitting. Mariners are advised that high
water levels in central New York may persist longer than along other
portions of the Canal System, delaying this preparatory work even
further.
Mariners are advised to monitor 1-800-4CANAL4 and www.nyscanals.gov for
updates and information. Additionally, mariners may sign up for
automatic email and text message alerts through the new Canal TRANSalert
service. This service is offered to notify mariners of major incidents
and emergencies that may affect navigation on the New York State Canal
System. To register for this service, please visit
www.nyscanals.gov/tas/.
