I have been looking for a simple way to create a web site for our travels
basically for the family and friends. I know quite a few of you have done
this for your cruises. Years ago I used Front Page for a while. However all
is forgotten and I want something simple for a fast start with a minimal
learning curve. I noticed a program called WebEasy in Staples the other day

  • has anyone used it and are there alternative suggestions? Ideas much
    appreciated.

I did have a DVD copy program called XCopy but they seem to have disappeared
possibly due to copyright infringements. Has anyone put together an on board
DVD movie library and how did you go about it?

Thanks

Ron,

I've been working on one for our new boat, and our future cruise plans,
also to keep family up to date on our progress home next month.  I got
webhosting from westhost on the recommendation of a listee, I'm still in
the process of getting the mail set up, but I have the preliminary
website up. I used WebEasy Pro 6 to create it. I also use Paint Shop Pro
9 for some of the graphics and photo manipulation. Web Easy does a lot
of scripting, and I've not found an easy way to update changes to the
site by individual page, although I'm sure it can be done.

The site is located at maerin.net if you're interested in having a look,
and offering some feedback. <maerin.net>

I'm not particularly fond of the way the thumnails are managed in Web
Easy, the webhosting service has a photo gallery program that plan to
try out as well. I should have resized my photos to make them load
faster, but I was under pressure to get them up for family/friends to
see. I'll tweak as I go!

Once you have a host for your web site, it's a relatively simple matter
to create basic web pages that display photos and text.

I use several programs that are freeware (no cost) to create the pages,
and upload them to the web. HTML-Kit is a web-page creator utility that
you can download from http://www.download.com/3000-2048-10035302.html
You can set HTML-Kit up so that you can use its built-in FTP function to
upload the files (web pages, photos, etc), or use another freeware
program that is strictly an FTP utility called Filezilla. Download it at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla

You'll need to get the FTP settings from your host no matter what
program you use to upload files.

Then you'll need a program to edit photos, and reduce their size. There
are no good free photo editors out there, although the one that comes
with Windows will do a fair job. Pay some bucks for Adobe Photoshop
Elements or one of the others and you'll be able to do more.

A good free program to reduce the size of the digital photos to be more
manageable on the web is Mihov Image Resizer found at
http://www.tucows.com/preview/284910 You can use it to resize images in
batch mode - saves a lot of time when you have any number of images you
want to convert to 640X480 etc for the web, or to change formats.

There is a learning curve no matter what route you take. It goes without
saying that you need a good internet connection. Dial up will do, even a
14.4 cell phone connection; you can get everything ready to go and then
make your connection and use FTP to upload the pages and photos all at
once with a minimum amount of time online.

Think about the structure of your web site before you do anything;
create the site on your computer exactly like you want it on the hosting
site and it will be simplier to maintain over a period of time.

I keep my web pages simple. If you want to see some of my work, take a
look at http://home.ix.netcom.com/~rmcleran/Sanderling.html (our boating
site) and http://www.harmonize.com/HCHarmonizers/ (a web site I maintain
for a group I sing with).

There are a couple of decent books on web design. The "Dummies" series
has a decent one for a few bucks that will get you started. Don't lose
sight of the fact that your web pages don't have to have all sorts of
fancy functionality. In my book, basic is better! It certainly is easier
and takes less time away from the important things in life - like boating.

Try the website creation program talkspot.com. You can create and keep
your site online for free.

Talkspot has the best of all attibutes.  It is FREEand it is created
by Ken Williams a boater (He took his Nordhavn on the Atlantic Rally
in 2003) and a software developer (he owned and sold Sierra Online a
gaming company)

There are also services online like freeservers.com (not free but a
few $ per month) who either let you upload html, frontpage  or have
simple web creation tools (Sitebuilder)

I use freeservers.com on my site allegria.iwarp.com
THe pnly problem for me is I have not spent the time to keep it up to date.

I did have a DVD copy program called XCopy but they seem to have disappeared

my favorite image utility is www.irfanview.com  which is free, small and
very intuitive to use.  the batch functions are very useful and it also
allows basic tweaking (brightness, contrast, etc...) along wth cropping,
etc..  great tool...  can open and convert jsut about any image format out
there...

I used to use Frontpage but switched to Dreamweaver has frontpage was very
limited once I got into more advanced development.  Frontpage, while easier,
uses some proprietary coding that's not always compatible and adaptable.

my girlfriend registered and hosted a personal sailing site thru godaddy.com
which i helped her put together  (www.sandbarhopper.com)  it's cheap and
comes with a number of tools including an image gallery system which is
pretty good. allows you to post pictures along with comments and organize
them in albums.  could be practical when cruising...  despite the low
hosting costs, so far it works well, and has none of the anoying ads and pop
ups some of the free hosting sites sometimes impose on you and your visitors

Ron,

You have received many good suggestions on the web hosting and design side
of your question, so I won't go there.

I, too, purchased and used DVD Xcopy several years ago. It was a great
program. Unfortunately, the developers lost their court battle for your
right to make "backup" copies of DVD's you own. Ultimately, this put them
out of business.

Coincidentally, I received an email from them just last week. They are back,
and have a new version of the software. As a previous owner of DVD XCopy,
they are offering upgrade pricing.

http://www.dvdnextcopy.com/index.html

But, you do not need to purchase this software to make copies of your
movies. I have been using some free software called DVD Shrink for quite a
while now, and it works fine. You can Google it to locate a site to download
it. It is available from several sources.

If you have Nero CD/DVD burning software on your computer, DVD Shrink will
automatically use that burring engine for burning the DVD. If you have some
other burning software, then copying becomes a two-step process. First you
create the copy with DVD Shrink, which then stores the files on your hard
drive. Next, you use whatever burning software you have to burn the files to
a DVD.

Blogger.com is pretty cool.  I have friends that have been updating
their own blog using this site and I have been playing around with one
too.

Here is a link to their site: http://www.tntgilson.blogspot.com

They have included video using http://www.youtube.com

Seems like this site would be great for posting cruise logs etc.
