Re: My previous post about rebuilding a water pump.
I am happy report that my 2005 Yamaha 15 is peeing a stream that a teenager
would be proud of.
I bought a kit from the local Yamaha dealer for $45. It contained the
impeller, a wear plate, a cup, a key and a water fitting.
The best thing that I found in terms of changing it was a video by
Jamestown Distributors which showed step by step how to do this on a 2005 Yamaha
25 hp. It was exactly the same procedure and parts as my 15 hp.
I removed the lower unit while the dinghy was on the top deck of the big
boat and took into my garage where I nailed two 2 x 4's to my work bench to
slide the unit between...just like in the video. This may the only thing
that I have ever worked on, marine wise that is, which was easy to access.
I felt so good by this time that it was almost as if I had a Yamaha
Certified Technician patch on my t-shirt. But when I looked down and saw no
patch, I got my digital camera and took pictures of it in all stages of
disassembly. That was good because during assembly I had to look at the pictures
and watch the video a couple of times more to make sure that I was not
installing some part backwards or upside down.
All went smoothly and today, even though it is a frosty 60 degrees here, I
off loaded the dinghy and took a test ride.
Thanks for the suggestions from all of you...except for the fellow who told
me that there would not be any pieces of the old impeller to be
found....wrong...I found all of them when I turned the lower unit upside down, shook
it and sprayed water through it.
