To Potential PHRF Racers and NBC Cruising Fleet Racing Members:
(To date, only these NBC boats have 2020 PHRF: Fandango, Golden Hind, Hee Soo, Polli, Race Riot, Sheba, Spectra, The Office, Xin Hang; and from Shattemuc: Cymothoe, Zoom)
Feedback always welcome.
The 2020 NBC PHRF racing season and schedule is a work in progress. To help racers plans, here are some key dates and likely racing opportunities (subject to change, and final pronouncements from the Club, RC, and Fleets).
Wednesday, June 17 -- Practice PHRF Race (Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker starts, if sufficient numbers) -- will NOT count for any 2020 series. We want to give more boats a chance to get launched and ready to compete in the official series, but if you're ready: 6:30 p.m. start (Spinnaker first, then Non-Spinnaker). Note, with completion of the TZ bridge, our courses will revert to what they were 5 or 6 years ago. We'll get draft SI for Wednesdays out before 6/17, so you can know where to find the fixed marks, and the courses.
Wednesday, June 24 -- First race of the Wednesday Night Series (Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker divisions). Must have valid 2020 HRYRA PHRF, and be member of NBC or a guest NBC fleet member -- no specific fleet membership requirement to race, or to participate in the series. Expect to race every Wednesday through September 23. Series scoring rules similar to prior years. You'll receive NoR, SI and Scoring Rules prior to the race. One or two races will be Pursuit Races.
Sunday, July 5 -- First race of the Sunday Series and regular Sunday racing. The RC will provide a PHRF start on Sundays for the entire season, starting July 5. NBC members and guests may join any Sunday start -- likely a single Non-Spinnaker division only, must have a valid 2020 PHRF. The Cruising Fleet will sponsor a series including only selected Sunday races, every other Sunday from July 5 to Aug 30 (NOTE THESE DATES: 5 Sundays -- July 5, 19, Aug 3, 17, 30 -- conditions permitting we hope to get minimum two race each Sunday). Series eligible racers must be Cruising Fleet Members (including Friend Members from Shattemuc).
Feedback on Sunday PHRF racing has been that weekends are often for entertaining, family sailing, cruising, etc. That's true for skippers and their crew. So, competing in a series where one was likely to have many DNCs wasn't attractive. So , we have a short series, easy on skipper and crew schedules, allowing most weekends for pleasure sailing and cruising. We have a single division, and encourage competitors to train crew, try a different skipper (or crew), have a family team, or sail short-handed. We plan to have a minimum of 2 throwouts, so no problem if you miss one Sunday in the series.
You'll receive NoR SI Scoring Rules before series begins.
See you on the river!
