I’m looking for clues on identifying a bird seen this morning. I’ve never seen it in my yard before, we live on a lake and it was in my perennial garden, poking around where the vegetation is pretty thick. It then moved into my vegetable garden. At that point I ran for my camera and it was gone, so no photo. Initially thought it was a brown thrasher, we’ve had on the property before. It was maybe a little smaller than a Robin, had similar speckled white underbelly markings of a thrasher or thrush, body was a rich, rusty brown color with long, slender tail feathers. I specifically recall a white patch at the back of neck, possibly a little white around the face. Anyone point me in the direction of types of birds I should look up I’d appreciate the help. Sounds like it might be a hermit thrush. Go to Allaboutbirds and take a look -- and listen to their call. Haunting and beautiful, easily recognized (but similar to the Wood thrush). Good luck! Hi Christina, could it be a type of thrush, like a Wood Thrush? You might also look at a juvenile Robin. They look different from adults and often confuse people. Curious!
