computer savvy. And, it won't do any good to try to talk me into getting a
laptop instead of the desk top. It's already bought.

Brent,

You could get an adapter that allows you to use a laptop-style card in your
desktop, but instead I'd recommend a wireless card designed for a desktop
machine. Here's an example, the D-Link WDA-1320, which is $37.99 at Best Buy:

The antennas on the desktop cards are quite a bit bigger and hence better
than the ones in the laptop cards.

Go to the following: I added this to my desktop and it works great - $19.99.

You could also get a USB WIFI antenna to get you access to WiFi.

Thanks so much for all the advice on this issue! Now, keep in mind that I
said I was a dumba$$ when it comes to computers, but after reading the
answers I realize I may have ask the wrong question. I guess it may not be a
wifi card I have, but it's a card where you connect by cell, direct without
going through a cell phone. (cell card maybe?). Is that the same adapter? I
realize the ideal would be to start from scratch but I already have access
to this card with the bill being paid through a work related situation, and
I don't have a personal laptop.

Brent

The card I mentioned in previous posting will accept the cell card with no
problem.  That's what I use on my desktop in the pilothouse. I connect to
update programs and email thru this cell phone modem card.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815124021  This will
work with the Verizon card.

Brent, sounds like you're using a Verizon or similar broadband card? If so,
you need a "PC card reader" or "PCMCIA card reader". Search for that
specifically on E-Bay and you'll get items like this:
http://tinyurl.com/yydwzf

I tried to find an external one that would hook up through one of the ports
or USB, but haven't had any luck with that yet. Maybe someone else had a
lead on that. Otherwise, you probably will have to use one of the internal
slots and either insert the card at the back of the machine, or use one of
the bays on the front.

Brent,

After Katrina, I got a Verizon Aircard and it works great. Near DSL speeds.
Something like $150 down and $80/mo for all you can eat internet. Goes in a
laptop.

Then I wanted internet on my other computers so I bought a Kyocera KR-1. You
plug the Aircard into it and it transmits a WiFi signal throughout your
boat. It's close to my desktop so I run a ethernet cable from the box to it.
Hardwired. My wife's computer came with internal wifi so she's also on the
internet through the KR-1. I already had a wifi card for my laptop so I'm
also good to go.

Also all computers are networked so we can exchange files. I can plot the
navigation the night before on my desktop in the dinette and upload it to
the navigation laptop the next morning. I can forward it from there to the
Furuno chartplotter so I have two separate displays from two separate gps
antennas in front of me.

Course I have paper charts in front of me marked up by my eversharp.

Regards.
