These free charts questions

We have had good success downloading charts from Maptech. I have had NO
success getting anything free from NOAA or the Army Corp, mainly because
all they offer are ENC (vector) and not BSB (raster) charts.

  1. Step one is to go to www.freeboatingcharts.com which is a Maptech
    site.
  2. Then, if you dont already have Maptech Offshore Navigator sotware or
their free Navigator viewer, download that first. (This is a LENGTHY
    download)
  3. Once you have one of those on your system, then click the link which
says Click Here to get Started
  4. This opens up a new page with 3 options.
    a. You can search by town or zip code for a chart
    b. You can use a Maptech chartkit region
    c. If you no the specific NOAA chart number, you can use the
    Advanced Search.
  5. We have used the first and third option and have downloaded several
    dozen charts already.
  6. Then, follow the included instructions for downloading and opening on
    your system.
  7. We have found that we have to close the Chart Navigator program and
reopen it after each down load for it to reorganize its chart file list.
  8. Charts come through great and are ready to use.

Why are they doing this?  I have always felt it was wrong for NOAA to
turn over to Maptech all the charts that we the taxpayers paid for to
allow them to make a profit off of them, but why now are they free???

Coastal Explorer reads just about any format and especially NOAA ENC and
Maptech formats.

I've been using CE for 18 months now and really enjoy it.  A fun new
faeture is overlaying sat. photos
with varying degrees of transparency.  I look forward to over laying
vector and raster with the level of
control.
There is a 10 day free trial package available at www.rosepointnav.com
My nav system consists of a laptop with Coastal Explorer, Raymarine C80
and a complete set of paper.
While doing the Great Loop I noticed that some of the marinas on the
rivers sold a little device with a red and
green buoy that could be turned 180 degrees to keep track of changing
markers.

Bob Davis

I just tried the download and it's very buggy (some charts don't quilt
properly, can't run BSB charts from the DVD - you must install them) and
I've managed to get it to crash quite a few times. I spoke to Coastal
Explorer and they said that the trial version is a copy of a previous
release and all of the bugs have been fixed in version 1.1. They intend to
upgrade the trial version to 1.1 in the next couple of weeks.

I would suggest waiting for the new release before evaluating it.

My Maptech CDs want to install on the hard disk and be registered. Only then
should they be brought into CE.

Mine too.  CE will load them from a CE, but they will have to be loaded each
time you fire up CE and want to use them.  Better to copy them on the HD and
tell CE where they are, and you won't have to worry about them again.

I've gone nuts trying to identify two waterfowl who may be a couple. They do
not fit with local knowledge here in New Bern, NC off the Neuse River. Here's
what they look like:

Very small round, black head with black extending down and inch or so on a
slender, supple, 8" neck. The rest of the neck and body are very dark. We only
see them up close towards dusk when they enter the marina. Their bodies are a
little smaller than Mallards. Their bills are very small and I have not
determined the color. When they swim, their upper neck forms an "S" curve and
moves fore and aft in rhythm with their movement. These could be immature,
much larger birds. Their wings are all dark underneath.

Finally, they have a most curious call - they bark!

Does anybody want to venture a guess? There are just two of them here. Oh, and
they swim around out in the creek allot, giving occasional barks to one
another as they travel relatively far apart from one another.

Thank you,
Ron Rogers
