Re: T&T: Using Navionics with Coastal Explorer

I have coastal explorer(CE) running on a notebook computer along with a
couple of fixed Chartplotters that use the Classic Navionics chips.  I note
on the Rosepoint website, they are currently beta testing a newer version
of CE that will have some nice features and will also be supporting
Navionics charts.  I've not got enough experience with CE to offer
beneficial feedback, so I am not participating in the beta testing.

I plan to cruise outside the US soon and am trying to figure out the most
cost effective way to get electronic chart coverage.  Since my older  fixed
Chartplotters use the Classic Navionics chips, I would need a $TON of these
chips to get good coverage.  However, I note that Navionics sells a single
Gold Chart (#17XG) for example that covers the entire Caribbean and most of
Baja.

Does any user happen to know if I can buy one of the $75 Navionics
Multicard Readers that has a USB cord and feed any of the newer, bigger
Navionics charts into my laptop to be used by CE?  It seems that most of
the press on the multicard Reader has been linked to RayMarine products (of
which I have none).  I'm hoping that the formatting is not limited to
RayMarine equipment.

This would certainly give me some flexibility since I believe the Reader
can also read the older Classic card format (of which I have a whole drawer
full of).  My understanding is that one of the advantages of CE is that
most electronic chart formats that come on a CD or DVD can be read and
used.

Thanks,

Tom
