The Gig Harbor Arts Commission is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibit
of the Gig Harbor OutDoor Gallery program. Artists are invited to submit
proposals for bronze sculptures or other durable outdoor art for display
within City limits for a period of two years beginning in the spring of
2012. The sculpture exhibit is intended to integrate art into the daily
lives of local residents and visitors by presenting works from locally and
regionally acclaimed artists. The work may be available for purchase (see #6
below).

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This open competition is for two outdoor artworks. Each piece will be
mounted on a 16-inch diameter stainless steel plate upon a 42-inch tall
basalt base pedestal located within the public sidewalk in downtown Gig
Harbor on  Harborview Dr between Soundview Drive and Pioneer Way. (Two
pedestals at 3025 Harborview Drive).

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Each sculpture must be of high artistic quality and suitable scale not to
    exceed approximately 2-feet square by 4-feet height.

  2. Durable material that is suitable for our marine weather environment is
    required.

  3. The artwork must be as resistant as possible to vandalism and must safely
    withstand pedestrian contact without impeding either walking or driving
    traffic.

  4. Artists selected for the 2012 exhibit will be required to sign an Exhibit
    Agreement with the City of Gig Harbor per the Liability section listed in
    the Exhibition Policies and Procedures).

  5. The artist is responsible delivery and installation of the sculpture at
    the specified location, including removal of the work at the end of the
    exhibition period. A public works representative from the City will approve
    the final placement, mounting method and stability of the work.

  6. If the artwork sells, the artist must replace the piece with another of
    the same quality and scale for the remainder of the 2-year cycle. If the
    artist does not have an acceptable replacement, the Arts Commission may
    choose another artist’s work. The replacement sculpture must be approved by
    the Arts Commission before the sold sculpture is removed. (Note: The artist
    will be responsible for all money transactions and delivery requirements
    with the purchaser.)

  7. The Arts Commission reserves the right to reject any work that does not
    meet standards of durability, safety and quality, and any work determined to
    be inconsistent with the City’s policy on Indoor and Outdoor Displays and
    Exhibits (downloadable from City website at
    http://www.cityofgigharbor.net/page.php?id=1341).

PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Entry Application Form (for each entry) and Artist's Resume.

  2. Proposals for Non-existing Work: If you propose work that is not yet
    fabricated, please submit a detailed illustration for each entry. Gig Harbor
    Arts Commission reserves the right to reject work that is significantly
    different from the original proposal or does not meet standards of
    durability, safety and quality.

  3. CD or Color Prints: Provide 3 views of each entry. Digital Quality: 150
    to 300dpi -- max size 5mg in jpg, pdf or tif format. Color prints (minimum
    5x7 up to 8 1/2x11-inch format) of each entry labeled with artist’s name and
    title of work. Prints and CD’s will become the property of City of Gig
    Harbor Arts Commission.

  4. Artist's Statement: A statement (250 word maximum) that describes your
    work (inspiration, personal statement) particular to each entry and suitable
    for publication.

  5. Mounting Information: Each pedestal includes a stainless steel top. All
    art pieces must be welded or securely fastened to a minimum one-quarter inch
    thick stainless steel plate that can be spot welded during installation.
