Conn. College arboretum: swallows, swifts, kingbirds

5/11 - I went to Conn College arboretum for two hours  this morning mostly
for warblers but spent most of my time partaking of the swallow and swift
show. Great opportunity to sharpen my swallow ID skills which aren't very good
but which certainly improved  today!  There were many tree and barn
swallows,  and a few rough-winged swallows. There were also at least 25, if not
more, chimney swifts occupying the upper echelons of the sky over the pond and
adjacent forest.  First time I have ever seen that many swifts and that
close.  Great looks! The light was just right.

Other birds either seen or heard:

1 northern parula
20+ yellow rumped warblers -- they were everwhere
1 magnolia or chestnut-sided  warbler (heard)
2 blue-winged warblers
1 prairie (heard)
2 black and white warblers
3 common yellowthroats
1 northern waterthrush  (h)
1 yellow warbler (h)
1 or 2 warbling vireo
1 red-eyed vireo seen and several more heard
1 great-crested flycatcher (h)
1 phoebe
several towhees and catbirds
1 veery
2 Baltimore oriole (h)
1 fish crow (h)
1 indigo bunting
2 eastern kingbirds (FOY - great looks --they were sitting on top of  a
stone wall and sallying out from there-- the wall where they have the stage for
outdoor summer theater)

2 red-shouldered hawks

I  also had great looks at the indigo bunting, as it was close and down
low.  It has been two days in a row that I have seen i. buntings close to the
ground, one yesterday at my feeder and on the ground and today's which was
low in a bush.  Usually I see them singing at the top of a tree.  When you
see one up close, it is amazing how small they really are. Somehow, when they
are at the top of a tree strutting their stuff, they seem much larger, at
least to me.  The one I saw today was like the one in my yard, mottled on the
back.  Am I correct in assuming that this is an imm., a one year old bird?
