Strut-Pro cutlass bearing tool follow up

Hello again,

Thanks to all who responded to my request however none had actual experience
with this tool.  Well, now I do and I must say my experience went exactly as
planned.  It took about an hour even with the "learning curve".  Based on my
experience, there is no reason to remove the shaft, which in itself is quite
a chore.  I have read some real "horror show" accounts of attempts at
changing cutlass bearings but this was no problem.  Make no mistake though,
it took a lot of force to push the bearing out.  I was quite tired of
cranking on the 24" breaker bar turning the screws.  I would not hesitate to
reccomend this method to anyone with a strut mounted bearing.  The tool is
quite expensive at $800 (a single shaft size is available for $400) but I
was able to rent it from my prop shop for $70 for the day.  Well worth it.

Hello all,

I am looking for experiences with this method of cutlass bearing
replacement, good or bad.  I have a 1 1/2" shaft, 2 3/8" OD bearing in a
strut (not a log) that needs replacing.  I am a pretty good mechanic but
have never tried this before.  I would likely make my own version of the
tool instead of paying the $400 price tag.  It looks easy enough in their
you-tube video ;-)

Thoughts?
