Detailing vessel

I have never paid anyone to detail my boat in any way. We do it our selves.
I have watched detail crews visit My dock neighbors boats and hit them with a lick and a promise. Interesting most come the day before the rain

No one will clean a boat better than the owner himself.
I know one guy who bragged he paid $3,000. Per year to keep up his bright work on a 42 Grand Banks

People pay hundreds of $$ for an oil change but I do my own.

Does anyone do their own routine maintenance and wash their own boat any more?

Bob

Sure.  Cleaned hull and applied Awlcare sealant by hand day before yesterday
and changed tranny oil yesterday.

I will change my oils when the oil analysis report says too but so far, in 5 years, the people analyzing the engine oil have only asked me to add a liter or so.

My tranny oil was going just like engine oil but two years ago, dumped entire lot into the bilge.

Tranny repair completed three days later, just in time to move from the dock that belonged to the weekend ferry boat.

Lee,

Are you saying that you have not changed your engine oil in 5 years other
than adding oil when needed?

Bob and all,
I normally change all the oil and all filters on our vessels and typically, wash and wax.  However, there are times when I have not:  On our new (to us) vessel, I wanted a Cummins Tech to go over all the engines before we left the dock in St. Pete.  He did all fluids, filters, zincs, belts, etc so I started “new.”  Could I have done that? Probably but living in VA, it was a job I farmed out to save me some time.  I had the detailer I recommended in a prior post wash and wax the boat while in Brunswick Landing Marina.  With the soot from the paper plant and bird droppings there, need to be on that. We went down once a month to enjoy the boat for up to a week at a time.  I had other tasks I needed to do and spending my time washing and eventually waxing (including the hull) while the boat was in the water was something I did not want to take the time doing.

What I spent my time on was: replacing both transmission coolers, replacing the MasterVolt battery charger, replacing the Revers-O, replacing the over the air TV antenna, replacing the anchor and marking the chain, smaller projects, etc.  When time is a factor, you have to make some choices and decisions.

Hey Steve, was the Reverso change out associated with the XchangR oil change system?

I had a Reverso pump on my GB42 as well as on the full-up XchangR  system I inherited here on the mainship, and their impellers were not worth spit failing almost every time I went to pump oil out of an engine.  Last August, I finally had enough and replaced the impeller pump with a gear pump.  I used a Marco M164-220-12 gear pump.  It fits where the crappy impeller pump was.

I had a Reverso on prior vessel (2005) worked great. This new boat came with an XchangerR. Did not pump. Assumed it was an impeller. Tried calling the company numerous times (St. Augustine) no answer. Tried emailing. No response. Talked to a couple trusted mechanics and both said the XchangeR is a “piece of ____.”

I decided to replace with a new Reverso. It is a much more robust unit than the XchangeR. When I eventually took it apart, the impeller was okay but quite small.
