We have a warbler with lightly hooded look, broken eye ring, and yellow
underparts My guess is a mourning but have no feel for unlikelihood or more
likely alternatives.

I think MacGillivray's Warbler, though much more rare in Ct overall, is much more likely this time of year than Mourning.

I second that. Not only is MacGillivray's more likely at this time of year, but the short description seems to match MacGillivray's better as, although plumages of Mourning show broken eye rings, this feature seems to be one of the most important here. This suggests MacGillivray's as the broken eye rings of this species are much more apparent than on Mourning from what I've seen.
Do we have a location for this bird?

I was forwarded one of Mr Stanley's photos. It is an Orange-crowned Warbler.

I also was forwarded the photo and I agree with Nick. It is easy to see why
the homeowner thought it may have been Mourning, and he deserves credit for
asking the question and providing a photo. Thanks Mike.

Mike, Patrick,
Interesting thought Patrick. Mike it would be helpful if you could get a try for a photo to really help you id this bird. As tough as it maybe, its worth a try.

All -- I don't pretend to be an expert, and we know this bird is an Orange-crowned, which is still always a nice find in CT.
For future reference, though, Patrick Comins was spot on that MacGillivray's would be the more expected of the two at this season. The fact that there are only a handful or records of this species from the northeast and I think only 2 from CT. though, tells how unexpected even MacGillivray's is. Anyway, my experience from the first CT record from New Milford and also one I saw in NJ a couple years prior is that MacGillivray's is somewhat vocal as it hops around and skulks, whereas Mourning is not. In fact, that behavior was a good clue that the bird Dave Tripp and I were chasing around in New Milford was in fact MacGillivray's and not Mourning.

Dear Mike et al,
I just received the photo myself of the Orange-crowned Warbler. I am also in agreement. I for one
strongly encourage others that need help to ID a bird to reach out and ask the question and help.
We all started out this way and were grateful to those that helped us.
So many on this list do so and sends such a positive message! The more we all try to help and educate
others into the window of the birding world, then hopefully a lightbulb maybe turn on about the
understanding of the bigger picture as a whole.

Would you rather hear of a MacGillivray's Warbler and find an Orange
Crowned Warbler,
OR
hear of an Orange Crowned Warbler and find out later it was really a
MacGillivray's Warbler?
