TWL: Seachest Design

Neatest one I ever saw was on a DeFever at Annapolis. Square design in
steel coming up through the hull, about 6" on a side. Had a flange on
top, with about a 3/4" thick piece of Lexan bolted down to it. The
various thru-hulls were attached to the sides. The top was above the
waterline, so if something clogged a thru-hull (they were the clamshell
strainer types) you could just unbolt the cover and reach in and clear
it. I'd certainly design one of these into any new boat I'd build. I
also saw one similar made of a piece of SS pipe, maybe 6" in diameter,
but everything had to be welded into place and the curvature had to be
dealt with. Seemed like a lot of pain just to accommodate a round
seachest.

Every instructor assumes you have nothing to do but study for his
course.
