    Highlights of reports received May 3 through May 10 from the  Niagara
    Frontier Region include SANDHILL CRANES, MARBLED  GODWIT, BLACK
    VULTURE, CATTLE EGRET, WESTERN MEADOWLARK,  WHIP-POOR-WILL and warblers.

    May 10, a flock of 14 SANDHILL CRANES passed over the  Hamburg
    Hawkwatch. At Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, May  6, a SANDHILL
    CRANE flew off from the marshes; likely the  first record of SANDHILL
    CRANE at preserve.

    May 5 and 6 at the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, a  MARBLED
    GODWIT at Ruddy Marsh - on the south side of Route  77 east of Griswold
    Road. The godwit was with over 100  YELLOWLEGS, about 1/4 mile south
    along the marsh dike.

    Three rarities in Chautauqua County this week. May 8, a low  flying
    BLACK VULTURE at the Ripley Hawkwatch. A WESTERN  MEADOWLARK continues
    to sing at a parking area near the  Hawkwatch on Route 5, north of
    Forsythe Road. And a CATTLE  EGRET has been present for several days in
    a farm field in  the Town of North Harmony, on Morely Road north of
    Route  394.

    The morning of May 3, a WHIP-POOR-WILL was calling near Lake
    Ontario, on Lake Road in the Town of Wilson.

    Warblers and songbirds are approaching peak migration,  though counts
    of individuals may be lagging. Twenty-five  warbler species this week
    were reported from many of the  favored locations - Delaware Park,
    Tifft Nature Preserve and  Times Beach in Buffalo; Chestnut Ridge Park
    in Orchard Park;  Amherst State Park; Point Gratiot and Lake Erie State
    Park  in Chautauqua County, plus backyards, creeks and small  woodlots.
    Highlights were ORANGE-CR. WARBLERS in Wilson,  PRAIRIE WARBLER at
    Amherst State Park and the Town of  Pomfret. Another PRAIRIE WARBLER,
    with LA. WATERTHRUSH at  Tifft Nature Preserve, and CERULEAN WARBLERS
    at Swallow  Hollow Trail in the Iroquois Refuge. LA. WATERTHRUSH also
    at  Chestnut Ridge Park.

    Other than warblers, numerous WILLOW FLYCATCHER, LEAST  FLYCATCHER,
    GR. CR. FLYCATCHER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, WARBLING  VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO,
    VEERY, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, HERMIT  THRUSH, WOOD THRUSH, SCARLET TANAGER
    and ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK.

    Other reports this week - NORTHERN GOSHAWK on property in  Ripley.
    BROAD-WINGED HAWK at Chestnut Ridge. A pair of  active PEREGRINE
    FALCONS about Gates Circle in Buffalo.  SOLITARY SANDPIPER at Tifft
    Nature Preserve. On the Niagara  River, 2 PURPLE SANDPIPERS still off
    Goat Island above  Niagara Falls and 6 LITTLE GULLS on the lower river
    at  Lewiston. In Dunkirk Harbor, ICELAND GULL and L. BLACK-B.  GULL. On
    Owens Road in the Tonwanda Area, 2 BARRED OWLS.  Three RED-HEADED
    WDPKRS. at Point Gratiot and another 3 at  Lakeside Memorial Park in
    Hamburg. A single RED-HEADED  WDPKR. at Beaver Island State Park.
    LINCOLN'S SPARROW at  Tifft Nature Preserve. And, a grape jelly feeder
    in a Silver  Creek yard attracted 2 ORCHARD ORIOLES and 7 BALTIMORE
    ORIOLES.
