Russ,

I discuss the options here: https://gilwellbear.wordpress.com/category/boat-technical-topics/equipment-topics/computing-aboard/connectivity-and-data-security/.  Al Thomason and Chuck Baier also have excellent information on DIY approaches on their websites.

Do you have a need for a router in addition to a range extender/"booster?"  For example, to support IP Cameras, NMEA Multiplexor for feeding PC/Tablet, or digital camera picture exchange?  If so, you'll need more than just a range extender/"booster."

The Wirie AP is a good pre-packaged solution.  Similar unit is the Ubiquiti Bullet.  The Bullet requires an Ethernet Cable for power and signal; Wirie requires a power cable for power, so neither is completely "wireless."  For pre-packaged solutions, IslandTimePC and WireAP are your best choices.  IslandTimePC has a great reputation for post-sales service and support.  For DIY solutions, I'm a fan of the Bullet; simple, inexpensive and robust.

The CradlePoint Router family supports both wireless Ethernet (wi-fi) and cellular modem connectivity, so for the way we cruise, it's by far the best router solution.  They're a lousy company for service and support, so I'd certainly like to know of other dual Ethernet/cellular modem router solutions.

Hope this helps.

Jim
