We use a KVH C3 and wouldn't be without a sat system. Others that receive a
digital over the air signal are doing what I would do if I didn't want to
go with the KVH or other brand of sat receiver.
My wife and I happen to like to watch TV and to those who recommended that
the below poster take up reading, running, shopping or napping instead of
watching TV I would say Pfffffffffft! I have friends who upon hearing
someone say something about a certain TV show, wrinkle their noses and say "well,
we don't watch much TV". I say Pfffffft! to my friends too.

My wife and I are novice cruisers, having purchased our used 43'
Jefferson MY about 2 months ago. We only have an older Shakespeare
mechanical TV antenna on the boat now (which isn't too bad if you are
in a marina near a large city) and are interested in upgrading to
another option, but hope to do so economically. Other than springing
for a satellite system (KVH, Raymarine, etc), are there other good
options? Thank you.

By the way, there is a bit of a "middle ground" that I've been enjoying over
the past few years, and that is watching TV shows on DVD. Over the course of
a summer of cruising, we watched all of "Six Feet Under", and the kids like
Seinfeld and The Simpsons. TV shows are MUCH less expensive than movies to
buy (typically about $25 for 12 episodes) and one of the things I really like
is that you know exactly how long they are going to be: 22 minutes for a
half-hour show and 52 minutes for an hour-long show. No commercials, you can
hit the pause button any time you like, and if you really want you can watch
2 or 3 in a row.
Just my two cents,

No need to buy them either, if they are on DVD, chances are Netflix has them.
