I am thinking about getting an i pad. I assume they have a built  in
GPS????  What navigation apps are available so that I can use it  for back up on
the boat?

Do these apps merely show one moving along a chart or may one plot routes,
waypoints, etc?

Get the iPad 3G, which has the GPS you want (fast, good accuracy, works
through GRP overhead). Don't get the non-3G. You don't have to activate the
3G service for the GPS to work.

There are a bunch of nav apps. Check Panbo for lots of discussion.
Navimatics (Charts & Tides) and Navionics offer vector charts (ENCs).
Navionics has route creation; not sure about Navimatics. I don't find route
management easy on Navionics, but it is doable. iNavX has NOAA RNCs (raster
charts), sensor data (e.g., GPS & AIS) from your fixed nav equipment, and
route management.

Sorry, couple of corrections:

  • The Navionics app uses Navionics charts (of course)
  • iNavX supports Navionics vector charts, but you have to buy them
separately (even if you already own the Navionics app).

Check out what Jeff Siegel has to say about iPads.

I bought one and love it. I use iNavX with the free raster charts. Love
it...especially in the dinghy at night.
