10/9 - Hammonasset Eider and Sparrows

10/9/07 - From Gina Nichol and Sunrise Birding group:
Madison,  Hammonasset State Park (8-11 AM) -- COMMON EIDER (female), LITTLE
BLUE HERON,  MARSH WREN, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, FIELD SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW

Other species recorded: Brant, American Black Duck,  Common Loon,
Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Northern  Harrier, Sharp-shinned
Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, American Kestrel, Black-bellied  Plover, Killdeer, Ruddy
Turnstone, Sanderling, Laughing Gull, Ring-billed Gull,  Herring Gull, Great
Black-backed Gull, Eastern Phoebe, Blue-headed Vireo, Blue  Jay, American
Crow, Black-capped Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, White-breasted  Nuthatch, Carolina
Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, American Robin, Gray Catbird,  Northern
Mockingbird, Palm Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Savannah Sparrow, Song  Sparrow,
White-throated Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, American  Goldfinch.

The eider was at the end of the moraine trail at the mouth of the
Hammonasset River.  We saw it from the end of the Cedar Island trail.  The sparrows
were all along the hedge line right of the outhouse at the entrance  to Willard
Island.
