Overtaking signels,  VHF 16 or 13, or Whistle are very important as most of us ( myself included) rarely keep an adiquate lookout aft. I have been passed many times close aboard at high speed with no warning, and often turn into the wake to avoid being thrown on my beam ends, so # 2 boat had better let me know that he is there.  Jon on Valentine

Tom,

We have gone up the Tenn-Tom when everyone else was headed South. We made
that trip 3 times, against the traffic!!!! All of our trips started the
first of October.

Main thing is don't rush as there is lots to see and do.
You have received some good advice and hints so far.

Definitely go to Chattanooga and we recommend that the few miles to
Knoxville is well worth it.  Go just a few more miles and you can see the
SEA RAY plant in all it's glory----you will see a lot of those boats and be
waked by them!!!!!

Another don't miss is Nashville. They have a very nice city dock and it is
right down town.

Well worth the trip.

One last thing, know the    WHISTLE SIGNALS and use them when meeting or
overtaking tows.

Easy to remember:  One whistle I am on the right.
Two whistle Iam on the left.

This is true meeting or overtaking.

Have a great trip.

We have sevral articles on the trip on our web page.
