Kingston Area Birds 25 November 2023 – 1 December 2023
Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintain records in a 50km radius of
MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their
sightings with ‘Kingston FN’. Alternatively, please email records directly
to me – contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require
review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise. Species in bold type
require completion of a rare bird report available on the KFN website or
directly from me. If indicated, an OBRC report may be required instead (
http://www.ofo.ca/site/Obrcreport). Some iPhone users report that bold type
may be replaced by asterisks.
Overview:
As the cold weather is starting to move in and snow on the horizon our
summer birds are few and far between. The summer birds are slowly
trickling into the area, so hopefully we will have some new sightings over
the next week.
Parish Notes:
REMINDER! The Owl Woods is closed to birders from Monday 20 November to
Sunday 10 December inclusive. The Owl Woods is privately owned. We thank
the owners for allowing us to go birding on their property and must respect
their request that we stay away at these times.

GREATER SCAUP - - 100 birds were seen in Cataraqui Bay on Nov. 25, 100

500 on Dec. 1; 6 were seen at Prince Edward Point NWA on Nov. 25, 200 were

BLACK SCOTER – 1 bird was seen at Heritage Point in Bath on Dec. 1
LONG-TAILED DUCK - 4 were seen on Wolfe Island on Nov. 26; 650 were seen at
Prince Edward Point NWA on Nov. 25, 10 on Nov. 27, 400 on Dec. 1; 20 were
seen on Long Point Road, PEC on Nov. 26; 7 were seen on Amherst Island on
Nov. 26, 40 on Nov. 28 and 150 on Dec. 1; 2 were seen on the Wolfe Island
Ferry Crossing on Nov. 29; 2 were seen at MacDonald Park on Nov. 30
BUFFLEHEAD -There were continuous multiple sightings throughout the
Kingston area throughout the week. The high counts were 26 at Prince
Edward Point NWA on Nov. 25; 30 were seen at Belle Park on Nov. 26; 26 at a
private residence East of Kingston on Nov. 26
COMMON GOLDENEYE -There were multiple reports of these ducks reported
throughout the Kingston Area throughout the week with high counts of 40 on
Amherst Island on Nov. 26 and 28 on Nov. 28; 56 were counted in Halsteads
Bay on Nov. 28
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE - *There was 1 bird seen just outside of the circle in
Prince Edward County on Nov. 26 and continuing on Nov. 27
RUDDY DUCK – 4 birds were seen at Belle Park on Nov. 26
HORNED GREBE - 2 birds were seen on Wolfe Island on Nov. 26; 4 birds were
seen off Long Point Road, PEC on Nov. 26
RED-NECKED GREBE – 1 was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA on Dec. 1
AMERICAN COOT – 3 were seen in Elevator Bay on Nov. 27; 7 were seen at Doug
Fluhrer Park on Nov. 29
KILLDEER -6 birds were still seen at Heritage Point in Bath on Dec. 1
WILSON'S SNIPE – 1 bird was seen at Wilton Creek at Big Creek/Towline Road

Edwards Reserve and Amherstview Sewage Lagoons. Permits are being checked
on a regular basis at Amherstview and those without are being evicted. KFN
members wishing to enter the Invista property must enter through the west
gate and show their membership card to security.
