Marin,
As with numerous other replys, I have used the Jabsco portable oil change
setup for 4 years on 2 boats. Both boats came (to me) with drain plugs replaced
by 90 degree fiitings and oil-resistant hose run out and up, secured above sump
level, with a JIC flare fitting and plug. On both boats, the power wire with
alligator clips is long enough to reach the batteries. I pump out one engine,
replace filters, fill same engine from gallon jugs, then pump waste oil out of
changer into the. newly-emptied jugs for removal to marina oil dump. Very
happy with system. I did replace the original suction hose after a few years as
it cracked and "lost suction." Another handy use is for draining gearbox oil. I
use a $0.99 auto-parts store drain pan, then suck the oil out using the oil
changer. Per another posting, when empty it is a bit top heavy; I secure mine
using a short bungee cord through the handle when not in use. Not only is it
much cheaper than an installed system, it goes with you to a friends boat or
your next boat!

I have to admit here that the oil in my Velvet Drive has never been changed.
About 4000+ of my hours on it. I check it every cruising day and also check
the temperature of the transmission. The oil is clear and looks new. After
some 16 years.
Is it time yet?
However Mr. Lehman gets changed as per American marine.
Great discussion on the oil change issue; I guess I will move it up on the
roundtoit list.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention earlier. I keep my Jabsco "bucket" in a milk
crate with a oil sorb pad in the bottom. This solves the "top heavy"
problem, and fits nicely in the dock box on the upper deck. I too replaced
the intake hose with some wire reinforced stuff that won't collapse under
heavy suction.

I'm still hot. It just comes in flashes.
