Our GB32 came with the king post already marked. My indicator is to tell
you which, of the almost four times it will be on top, is which.

If the king post is marked it should be simple to count how
many turns of the wheel it is from stop to stop (if you have hydraulic
steering you will have a king post, it just will change on a regular
basis). It is simple to count the number of turns from the hard to
starboard stop to the hard to port stop and divide by two. Then one
only has to put the rudder hard over and then rotate the wheel the
correct number of times to find the center.
On my boat, a Gulfstar SailMaster 39, I have cable steering
and the wheel spins about 1.4 times from center to hard over. If I am
ready to leave the dock and wish to center the rudder I simply put the
rudder hard over and turn back to center. I will let the marked king
spoke go by once and stop turning the second time it is at the top.
