As expected, my sunflower, thistle and suet feeders are quite busy
this morning. Since we are stranded until the plow guy comes I thought
I would take a quick rough count of the species present at this time.
Besides the birds present on the feeders and below, the trees
surrounding our house are occupied as well.
The quick count species this morning are: White Throated Sparrows 24+
(possibility of other sparrow species-just a quick overview)-the most
I have ever had, Cardinal 18+, Blue Jay 15+, Juncos 12+, Chickadees
12+, Titmice 12+, Starlings 12+, Mourning Doves 10+, Goldfinch 7+,
White Breasted Nuthatch 6+, House Finch 5+ Purple Finch 5+, Downy
Woodpecker 3+, Red Bellied Woodpecker 2 pair, Pine Siskin 3, Towhee 1
pair, 1 wren. I have not seen the Grosbeak in a week or so.
How about your feeders?

Ours are in a frenzy, as they have been for the past two days. These birds
can really sense a coming storm. Hard to count species as they move back &
forth between the feeders but I see I needn't have worried about losing six
male cardinals to the ever vigilant Cooper's hawk last year before I moved
my feeder location. There are always at least eight males in view at one
time. I have not seen the pair of purple finches or the siskins (the little
bullies) in about a month. It certainly is beautiful and the sun is just
coming out. We leave tomorrow for a month in Florida where I hope to find
our little backyard scrub jay family safe and sound. They had a baby last
year so I am hopeful. Happy New Year everyone!

I usually don't chime in on backyard bird populations; I much rather prefer metapopulations and statistical trends. But the Stratford-Milford CBC seemed really quiet yesterday morn. I noted some natural food still out and about, but birds were really hunkered down. Had I driven around searching for feeders, perhaps I would have done better.
As for my feeders, they've been full of Fox Sparrows, Pine Siskins, Juncos, Blue Jays, jovial nuthatches and the usual woodpeckers.

Thanks, Jayne! As I was shoveling my driveway and experiencing this brutal wind, I was worrying about our little Calliope. I'm so glad she's okay!

And I can't stop thinking of yesterday's sightings of YC Night Heron and Great Egret. I wish I could have invited them home for some sardines!

I'll chime in, too. I said to my husband at 4 AM this morning over coffee, "I wonder how that Calliope Hummingbird is doing?" Thinking of him/her holding on to that little branch for dear life in these winds...
