Retractable Screens

Considering installing retractable screens on 2 openings into salon---rear door which opens to sundeck  and sliding door which opens to side deck.  They are available as DIY kits or commercially-installed. Questions:

  1. What about present hardware on door frame, e.g barrel-bolt which locks sliding door from inside vessel.  It is mounted on door jamb and mates with a corresponding hole in door top rail.  This would interfere with screen mount I think.
  2. Retractable screens require both a top and bottom rail in which to run.  Do you tend to trip over the bottom rail?
    3.Recommend DIY or commercial install?
  3. Brands I have seen are Phantom and OCL (at Home Depot)

Bob
I have Oceanair screens on the two forward doors and a double 4 ft door aft;
basically a shade rotated 90 degrees.
I installed them myself and they work "OK".
You need to get the frame level and square which is not always easy on a
boat.
You do tend to trip over (bend it) the lower track; do not really know
of a solution other than a big deal fabricated one piece door and track.
The top of the end piece that you pull across tends to come out of the
top track.
It goes back in easily enough.
They require care to pull out and get the magnet fully engaged so they
will stay shut; not really something you want to do frequently.
But all in all they do the job.
Good luck.
