We have removed 10+ year old vinyl lettering from Panacea's fiberglass
transom by careful scraping with razor blades and now are left with a heavy
adhesive deposit which has resisted every effort at removal so far.  We've
come closest with "Goof Off" and WD-40 has some small softening effect but
would appreciate any help or suggestions???

I have been told  first hand  to use regular mayonnaise for old
masking tape removal. Leave on over-night. Apparently the vinegar/oil
combination is the active ingredient and the gooey part keeps it all
in place to give time for the magic to work.
I realize plastic lettering may use a different glue, but what have
you got to lose? Try mayonnaise and let us know if it worked for you.

Hi Don
I have had great success removing that nasty sticky adhesive
left by self stick hooks stuck all over the boat by the PO. They were stuck
to the teak veneer, paint & fibreglass. I use electronic or automotive
contact cleaner available from CRC. It also works wonders at removing oil
stains from light green carpet and leaving no residue or removing colour.
Working in an automotive workshop we have access to all types of solvents &
I find the above to be the kindest to different surfaces. Any electronic
type cleaner should work if it is non residual. Spray on and wipe off with
paper towel.
Cheers
