Eastern Canadian Questions

Bob McLearn asked...

(1) Do you need a radio-operator's license (as some of the Canada based
web sites indicate) or can you "get by" without one?

(2) Where is the best place to get electronic and paper charts of
Canadian waters?

(3) For internet access, can we purchase an air-card which will work in
Canada on a Canadian cell phone network or ISP (similar to what we could
get with Verizon or AT&T in the US)?

Dennis replies....

  1. I know of no one who's ever ben asked to produce a license for their VHF
radio. And, as others have said, there is a 90 day grace period anyway. I
don't worry about it and spend part of most summers in Canada.

  2. See the web site at http://www.chs-shc.gc.ca/pub/en/products/cat/. This
is the Canadian Hydrographic Servies web site and has both electronic and
paper charts. Also, Ess-Kay Marina in Baldwinsville, NY, near the Oswego
Canal may have what you need, but may have a slight price markup added.
Call ahead to reserve what you want there. Phone number is in Waterway
    Guide's coverage for the area.

  3. This changes annually with policies of individual carriers. In 2006 we
were able to change Verizon's plan from America's Choice to North American
and had farily good coverage in all of Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence
River's 1,000 Islands, the Rideau, Ottawa River, and Richeleau Canals WiFi
is likely to be available as well, particularly with an antenna. If you
want to change a cell plan with Verizon, you MUST do this prior to crossing
the border. It can be done with just a phone call to Verizon. Record the
name and phone of the individual with whom you talk to gurarantee you can
return to the same plan when you re-enter the States. They will want you to
sign up for the plan now available, not necessarily what you had when you
left. Some calls well prior to the day you want to cross the border may be
    appropriate.

I hope we are able to cross wakes this summer. We will be headed south from
Lake Champlain to the NYS Canals in mid June, then across NYS.

I'm planning to add a laptop with maptech software to the boat as a backup
chartplotter.

I would appreciate any recommendations on inexpensive laptops with easy to
see screens; and any comments on the best software to use with the laptop.
The salesmen I've talked to don't seem to understand the need to be able to
see the screen from the bridge.

Thanks.

Phil,
We use Rose Point Coastal Explorer software on a standard Dell Inspiron
laptop. Note this is in
the P/H not on the bridge.
We are most satisfied with the Coastal Explorer software for
navigation.Their tech support is superlative.
The techy ans all questions and has walked me through sev processes, as I
told him, I am his job security!!

Phil:
I have just completed a market survey of laptops for outdoor use at work.We
will be using them in the cockpit of aircraft. This is a very bright
environment.

I also posted a thread on the Passagemaker message board on the same subject
under the ELECTRONICS category. The primary factor you need to look for is
the amount of NITS able to be emitted by the monitor. NITS is a measure of
the ability of the screen to emit light, which is needed to overcome the
brightness of the surrounding environment.

The problem I found in my market survey is some laptop manuf. tell you their
screen is "outdoor" readable but are unable to give you the # of NITs it
emits. This leaves you with the inability to make a direct and fair
comparison to other products that do provide the NITS specification.
Another very important feature of laptops is the size and feel of the
keyboard to your hands. Some of the new smaller ones may not feel right to
you and allow you to type normally. I found this out the hard way when we
purchased the Panasonic Toughbook PC a few years ago. The keyboard is so
small it aggravates me every time I use it.

For outdoor viewing, I looked seriously at the Fujitsu, Toshiba and Dell
laptops. I concluded by choosing the DELL Latitude D630 ATG. The screen is
14.1 inch 500 nit Outdoor-viewable LCD Panel. (go to the DELL site, select
Small/Medium Business, Business Class Latitude, then Specialty Laptops).
You have to realize that you CANNOT get a good outdoor viewable display in a
CHEAP laptop. The technology for good outdoor viewable is relatively new in
the laptop market space and therefore the price is notable. As with all
laptops, screen selection is a significant drive of total cost.

My Dell Latitude ATG laptop was ordered last week. I havent received it yet
but can share the results with you after I get it.

Note also that DIRECT sunlight is the most difficult to overcome. The screen
has to emit more NITS than the direct sunlight in order for you to see what
is on the screen. In the shade on the fly bridge is substantially easier to
accomplish. I did personally see a Fujitsu TABLET laptop that worked
impressively well in DIRECT sunlight. I didnt choose this one because this
screen only comes in the tablet model that does not include a keyboard. I
couldnt accept that tradeoff. But I have colleagues who use this Fujitsu
tablet in the cockpit of aircraft very well and they like its readability. I
could not believe how well it displayed in direct sunlight when I was in
Oklahoma one summer day. I would have bought a Fujitsu laptop with this
screen if they had made it available on their other models of
laptops/tablets.

Note also that some companies only offer the outdoor readable screens on
TABLET PCs which is a more expensive variation of the laptop. The tablet
allows you to turn and then close the screen, latch it down across the
keyboard and use a special tablet pen to make entries. The screen view is
converted from LANDSCAPE to PORTRAIT. The tablet PC also uses a variant of
the Microsoft operating system called Windows XP Tablet. Its identical to XP
Pro except that it accommodates the pen and rotation of the screen and has
some other applications that accommodate the pen. For the boat environment,
you will never need or use the tablet this way. Its more difficult to enter
text this way and requires the user to learn how to do it properly. Not good
for bouncing around. (I have been using a tablet PC for about 4 years now).

We used 2 different HP laptops for out Loop cruise in 2005 and continue to use
them.  One has a 15.4" mat finish screen and the other is 14" smooth finish.
We continue to use them and found both to be acceptable on the flybridge or
lower helm station.  When there is reflection, we just angle the screen down
and visibility is fine.  We have never bothered wity na sunshade but a simple
cardboard screen might be helpful at times.

We use Fugawi and Maptech Offshore Navigator (came free on our NDI Canadian
digital charts) and slightly prefer Maptech.  The Maptech version that was
being included with their chartbooks is a teaser version we did not like.  The
Managing the Waterway people sell a CD/DVD? with over 3,000 North American
charts for $37 that we found to be outstanding.

Hope this helps.

We use an older $200 indestructible Thinkpad with an older Nobeltech version
and free charts.  Bought all off e-bay.  Laptop has been dropped, sprayed with
salt water, and now used by my 11 year old daughter when we're not on the
boat.  She's still ticking, although the batter lasts only an hour or two.

Obviously, this laptop is secondary to on-board chartplotter.  I've owned both
Garmin and Standard Horizon, buying both used off E-bay.  I prefer the
former.

Night time use of the laptop for navigation requires you to know how to
reduce the illimunation of the screen. Once you get it down to a much dimmer
setting, you will like it.

Someone passed a web site recently where you could purchase a GPS that would
plug into a laptop with UBS for aprrox $79, to use with chart plotters.  I
lost the web site.  Could you please resend to me.

How does $36 work for you?  Go here:
http://tinyurl.com/3e5equ
You will have to copy and past this into your browser.

Also, if you go to http://www.sping.com/seaclear/sc_setup.exe
you will find some very nice totally free SeaClear software that works very
nicely.

Let me know if any problems.

Boaters:

I've read lot about electronic charts for use on a computer, but paid little
attention until I purchased the boat laptop and got Nobeltec and Maptech
lite software.  Now I'm searching for electronic charts.  Going to NOAA got
lots of charts for free but they are not recognized by the software.

Is it the case I must purchase charts to use in these software packages,
beyond what I have now or is there a place to get electronic charts on the
"cheap" to use with these packages on my laptop?

The ENC and IENC vector charts that are provided by NOAA and the Army Corp
of Engineers respectively no longer work with Nobeltec.  They stopped
support with version 8.1 and as far as I know have no plans to fix it.

Try RosePoints Coastal Explorer for a software package that supports all the
ENC charts and Maptech also.  A free trial is available on the Rosepoint web
site, so you can try it before you make a purchase.

(I have no connection with either)

You should be able to download free charts compatable with Maptech (not sure
about Nobeltec).  Note that there are 'two' types of charts Vector ENC, and
older Raster charts.  You might have just down loaded the wrong type.  You
can download each from NOAA here:
ENC:    http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/MCD/enc/index.htm
Raster:  http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/Raster/Index.htm

Or, if you just want the raster charts, Maptech has a web site that presents
a bit better format: http://freeboatingcharts.com/  you can download them if
you have a high speed connection; they also offer to sell you CDs mailed to
you.

And there is also a free program Sea Clear that is rather useful as well.
It is fully compatable with the Raster charts:
http://www.sping.com/seaclear/

Good luck!

And don't forget the free chart plotter software (www.seaclear.net). Works
just like the $300 software. Add a hockey puck GPS, plug it in your laptop
and you're good to go.

You can get everything (including GPS puck and charts on DVD) for $80 from
http://www.midbaymarine.com/bu-353.html (we did).

Or just go out and buy the GPS and download the chart plotter software and
charts free right now.

It's a great way to have an inexpensive primary or backup chart plotter.

I'm looking at the $150 - $200 monitor (bright screen display) as a back up
as well for the fly bridge. Radio Shack sells a 350 watt inverter for about
$40 and cigarette lighter connection to run it on.

Best,
Bob
